Biography

Paul is a proficient musician and composer with a diverse range of experience working with young people in both education and community settings. He has always been passionate about music and over the years has gained extensive knowledge and skills both on a practical and theoretical level. He has had many years of classical training as well as widespread experience of performing in cathedral choirs, orchestras and rock bands. His vast experience of music composition across a diverse range of genres and in a variety of contexts has allowed him to explore and develop his passion and skills in songwriting. The years spent in a managerial role within the band One Day Elliott has given him an excellent understanding of the music business including experience in organising events, UK and international tours, promoting concerts and the band in general, as well as handling all the band merchandise. All of this and considerable involvement, working in education, communities and youth arts, has granted him valuable knowledge of working with people.

Currently, Paul is studying towards a PhD in Music at Westminster University where he is consolidating and expanding his learning and understanding as a music professional. He finished his undergraduate course, also at Westminster, with a first class degree and achieved an academic award for the best grades in the year, each year he was there. He developed many lucrative and creative professional relationships through his studies and has already identified and utilised opportunities for personal and professional development. His time so far at Westminster has granted him huge amounts of experience, not only in the music industry as a whole but has also enabled him to greatly develop skills in composition, arranging, vocal training and educating. In the summer of 2012 he was given the role of musical director for the Olympic Torch relay event in Maidstone, Kent, which was held at Leeds Castle, in front of over 8000 live audience members.

Career to Date

Guest Lecturer/ Vocal Tutor/Dissertation Supervisor – Westminster University, Sep 2013 – Present

Paul has taken up a role as Guest lecturer on Westminster University’s commercial music course. He also provides vocal tuition at all levels (4,5 and 6) and supervises students through their undergraduate dissertation process.

School Choir Master/ Director – St George’s School, Gravesend Sep 2013 – Present

Paul runs and directs the school choir, picking and teaching the appropriate repertoire for their annual concerts and performances.

Musical Director/Conductor – Maidstone Borough Council for Maidstone’s Leeds Castle Olympic Torch Relay Event – Jan –June 1012

During this prestigious event for the town, Paul worked alongside composer Edmund Joliffe as musical director for the event. He auditioned and picked the orchestra, choir and soloists and was responsible for the teaching of the entire musical work commissioned for the event. Paul conducted the performance at Leeds Castle in front of an audience of over eight thousand and also acted as producer for the recording of the musical.

Singer/ Soloist - All Saints Collegiate Church Choir 1987 – 2009

Much of Paul’s musical training has come from his time spent singing in the Choir at All Saints Church, Maidstone of which he was a member since the age of six; starting off as a boy treble and later as the baritone soloist. Due to its extensive repertoire and consistent high standards of singing, the choir has earned itself the reputation of being one of the premier choirs in the south east, often compared to the likes of Canterbury Cathedral and, over the years Paul has been able to perform in many fantastic venues including St Paul’s Cathedral, Truro Cathedral and concert halls across the UK.

Singer /Songwriter - One Day Elliott 1999 – Present

One Day Elliott have performed over 750 live shows in venues all over the country, supporting the likes of The Fall, Lostprophets, The Cooper Temple Clasue, The Anti Nowhere League, Raging Speedhorn, Capdown, Feeder, Ash, Gary Numan, Hundred Reasons, Spunge, Allister and Zebrahead to name but a few. They have sold over 15,000 copies of their albums which were recorded and released by themselves without the aid of any record companies or organisations. Paul also designed the artwork and layout of the Albums. He organised and completed two successful tours in the United States. The website receives regular hits from fans worldwide and ODE have a mailing list of over 20,000 individuals. They have received fantastic reviews from many music publications and have had airplay on Radio One.

Music Teacher - Highsted Grammar School for Girls, Sittingbourne 2006 – 2009

At Highsted, Paul taught key stage three music, delivered the syllabus and worked with the students specifically on listening, composing and performance skills. He assisted with the delivery and direction of school concerts and musical productions, with specific responsibility for choral and ensemble work. He also supported GCSE and A-Level students with performance pieces and compositions.

Musical Director / Composer / Pianist - Square Pegs Drama Club, June 2011 - Present

Paul was approached by Square Pegs Drama Club, an organisation set up specifically for young people with various learning disabilities and/or social and communication difficulties, to work with the youth theatre director, staff and volunteers, to initially deliver musical elements of three performances. He composed the accompanying score including two ensemble vocal pieces, in collaboration with the young people and artistic director, taught the songs to the 45 young people and accompanied the full performances on piano. He has been asked to return each year and has now enjoyed collaborating on several different plays, productions and holiday workshops culminating in 2014’s performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for which Paul composed, directed and accompanied the entire score.

Club Class DJ – The Loft - 2006 – 2009

Paul was resident DJ for Club Class at the Maidstone nightclub ‘The Loft’. During the time he was there, the club grew in both stature and popularity and he has performed alongside several famous guests to the venue, including Bloc Party, Pete Doherty and Radio One’s Zane Lowe, who actually named his night at the loft as his favourite of that year.

Guest Vocalist - Cathedral Singers of Ontario Dec 2011, Jul 2012, Dec 2012 July 2013

Paul performed with this choir for the first time over the Christmas of 2011 at St Paul’s Cathedral, and has consequently been asked to re-join them every time they have since returned to the UK. To date, Paul has sung with them in the cathedrals of Gloucester, Peterborough, Southwark as well as St Paul’s and Westminster abbey in London.
